Innovation
can be defined as variation on a theme.
Within a given framework or theme, innovators
seek new processes, methods, and dynamics that
improve performance. Fundraising goals and accountability
standards provide the framework in which innovation
can occur. Variation and creativity within that
framework improve performance.
Innovators think outside the box. They don't
disregard the box, but they do recognize that
"business-as-usual" solutions are no guarantee
of future success. They think ahead and try to
bring their organizations with them.
Creative destruction occurs every day in the
business world, as old ideas and products give
way to new innovations. Old processes are replaced
by more efficient ones, and yesterday's blueprint
for success becomes tomorrow's recipe for failure.
What is innovation? It might be survival.
